Oldham County Graduate Quincy Barnett Eyes Morehead State University After Winning $15K Louisville Water Scholarship

Quincy BarnettOldham County Schools student Quincy Barnett will attend Morehead State University to study mechanical engineering.

Barnett graduated from South Oldham High School with a 4.0 GPA. His hard work paid off by earning a $15,000 scholarship sponsored by Louisville Water.

Barnett is the sixth winner of the Thomas Family Scholarship, an award named after the first Black family on Louisville Water’s payroll dating back to 1872. He won the scholarship in February at the Annual YMCA Black Achievers Award Celebration.

Barnett competed against four other students to win the scholarship. One of the requirements was to submit an essay on the importance of water in the environment.

Quincy BarnettAs an aspiring engineer, he centered his essay on sustainability.

“Safe water is a vital necessity that is responsible for the sustainability of all life on earth,” Barnett wrote.

Of all the applications received for the scholarship, Barnett’s 4.0 GPA made him an extremely attractive candidate for this year’s award.

A week before Barnett’s graduation, Louisville Water President & CEO Spencer Bruce welcomed the winner and his parents to meet with the company’s Executive Leadership Team and Thomas Family Scholarship Selection Committee.

“I decided on mechanical engineering because I’ll be able to do more with the degree once I graduate. I will have more options for a career,” Barnett said.

Quincy BarnettHis parents, Quincy and Shauntessa Barnett, are proud of his accomplishments.

“We are thankful for this opportunity from Louisville Water and appreciate all you’ve done for him,” his mother said.

“This is great,” his father said. “You all taking time to meet with us, learning more about the company and what you do for the community means a lot.”

Louisville Water Digital Media Specialist Lauren Horton chaired the scholarship selection committee. She highlighted Barnett’s achievements during the meet and greet.
