A tribute from Spencer Bruce, President Louisville Water
All of us at Louisville Water who knew and worked with Dr. Rengao Song were heartbroken when we heard of his passing. Rengao devoted more than 20 years of his life to ensuring the Louisville region had the best water in the country.
He created a culture within the organization that Louisville Water will always go above and beyond to provide safe, great tasting water that consistently exceeds customer expectations.
This philosophy inherently led to multiple layers of protection for every aspect of water treatment and quality, and it created a “culture of excellence” across the organization.
But Rengao did much more than just protect Louisville’s water. He also had a desire to help others. Whether it was mentoring employees, training operators, or working with peers across the country to solve water quality issues, he had a longing to “support” and “encourage”. He was not only a technical expert but also a servant leader. This was never more evident than when I had the privilege to work directly with him at our treatment facilities. He was always patient no matter how many questions I asked and spent the time to make sure I truly understood the treatment processes.

I am grateful that he was my colleague and I was able to call him my friend. Another friend and colleague, Dr. Eric Zhu recently said this about Rengao, “The true measure of a life is not the titles held or awards received. It is the impact left on others. By that measure, Rengao’s life was extraordinary.” I couldn’t agree more. He will be missed by many but his legacy at Louisville Water continues.
