Golf Scramble Raises Nearly $15,000 to Help Local Children

Sunshine and 80 degrees made for a perfect day at the 6th Annual Jimmy Stone Memorial Golf Scramble at Long Run Golf Course. The event honors Jimmy Stone, a longtime Louisville Water employee who was killed in 2019 when a car hit him while he repaired a fire hydrant, and it benefits local youths in his memory.

“We raised nearly $15,000 to give to the children at Neighborhood House in Portland. I really appreciate all that came out and volunteered and participated. I couldn’t do it without them,” said Adam Carter, retired Local 1683 President and co-founder of the golf scramble.

“Most people don’t get that blessing that they turn one of the worst days in their life to something that’s making the world a better place,” Stone shared about carrying on her late husband’s legacy. “It’s been a privilege for me to be able to be a part of this and know that in Jimmy’s name, we’re doing something good.”

The locker room gives local children a place to study and receive tutoring but also provides some of the necessary tools to set them up for success.

Helping children in his friend’s name is one reason Brian Jeffries has not missed a single golf scramble.

He was a good friend, very passionate about his job, very passionate about his work with children in soccer and coaching and teaching those kids,” said Jeffries, who was Stone’s supervisor when he retired from Louisville Water. “It’s a great testament to Jimmy to be able to participate (in the scramble) and carry on that legacy to give back to those kids through this event.”

Carla Stone said several golfers talked about going to Neighborhood House to see how the fundraising dollars help the community. She added she’s grateful for her Louisville Water family and their support of her and her two sons.

Plans are already underway for the 7th Annual Jimmy Stone Memorial Golf Scramble next summer.
