Healthy Handwashing Habits

When you look at all the ways water keeps life flowing – drinking, cooking, cleaning, bathing; fueling businesses, schools, and hospitals; it’s hard to Imagine a Day Without Water. This year, the day dedicated to highlighting the critical role water has in our lives coincides with Global Handwashing Day.

Healthy handwashing is a habit Louisville Water is proud to teach year-round. In fact, we’ve spread the message to tens of thousands for more than two decades!

“Washing your hands is a visible way people use our product, but most people don’t stop and think, ‘Wow, Louisville Water helps me clean my hands’,” said Kelley Dearing Smith, Louisville Water’s vice president of communications.

When Dearing Smith started at Louisville Water, teaching proper handwashing in local schools and daycares was part of our education program. In 2006, we partnered with Louisville Metro Public Health to rebrand the lesson: Clean Hands Up!

“The name came about to focus on the positives of washing your hands and at the end of the lesson, we’d ask kids (and adults) to put their clean hands up,” shared Dearing Smith. “The Clean Hands Up! program links one mission of public health with something simple that has a profound impact.”

The importance of handwashing magnified during the COVID-19 pandemic. What we knew about the virus seemed to change daily and as fears rose, washing our hands and trying to stop the spread of germs felt like something we could all do to help.

The Clean Hands Up! program has evolved over the years to include childcare centers, middle and high school students, local college nursing programs, and senior citizen homes.
