“It’s the anticipation of what happened; What happened last night? What are we going to walk into today? I like it because you just never know. There might be 10 main breaks you come in to (to work). There might be somebody that’s hit a hydrant or somebody’s out of water. There’s always something’s that going on and there’s always something that needs to be done.”

Tytus started in the radio room at Louisville Water in fall 2021.

“That’s where I got my stripes,” she said about juggling calls from customers and crews out in the field. But then life threw a curveball her way.

“I had surgery on my vocal cord. They had told me I wasn’t going to be able to talk for a while, so I rearranged it to where I could basically do planning paperwork. Then the opportunity came for me to go to planning (permanently).”

“You learn their skills. You learn what they’re good at, what they might not like so much, which areas might not be their strengths. That’s what helps you as a planner because you learn to put your aces in their places.”

Last year, Tytus went from having a general idea of the work crews perform in the field to jumping right in and learning firsthand. She landed a spot on Louisville Water’s all-female tapping team.

“That was a very humbling experience for me. I personally signed up to do it because I wanted to learn. I wanted to give myself the opportunity to get a hands-on experience of what they do every day. I can say from me doing that, I respect the women here on a whole other level.”

The victory earned the team a spot in the national competition in Denver this summer.

“To be honest, I actually want to win. I feel like we can do it. I walked into it blind, but now that I’ve got a better understanding of it, my competitive side is ready!” she said.

The experience not only boosted Tytus’ relationships with her Louisville Water family, “Everybody was real encouraging. Everybody was real supportive. A lot of positive feedback about it. I was happy I did it.”

But it also gave her a fresh perspective.

“It’s different seeing things on paper compared to when you go out to the field, and you actually see it for yourself. That helps you understand it a lot more as far as what’s going on.”

Knowing the service Louisville Water provides is what keeps her coming back for more.

“Everybody needs water. I feel proud. I’m proud to work for Louisville Water Company. I feel like it’s job security. Water’s never going out of style. It’s always going to be a need. And I feel like I landed in a good spot.”
