Worked at Louisville Water since 2015
Efficient and effective are two words you’ll hear Internal Auditor Jenni Schelling use often.
She makes sure Louisville Water operates successfully by evaluating internal controls, risk management, and operational processes.
“Identifying areas for improvement and providing actionable recommendations to management gives me a sense of accomplishment,” Schelling said. “I review processes throughout the company for opportunities to improve efficiencies and effectiveness, and provide the Board of Water Works Audit Committee assurance that we are in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, and industry regulations.”
Schelling just celebrated her 10th anniversary at Louisville Water and said interacting with coworkers is one of the reasons why she loves her job.
“I (work with) employees from various departments and levels. I enjoy the collaborative aspect of the work, building genuine relationships, communicating audit recommendations, and negotiating action plans,” she said.
For someone interested in a career as an internal auditor, Schelling offered the following advice:
“Internal auditing is a multi-faceted career that involves analytical, problem-solving and report writing skills while also requiring soft skills such as relationship building, communication of audit results, and negotiation,” she said. “I would recommend that someone develop strong analytical skills to evaluate complex financial data, identify patterns, and detect anomalies (differences). Also, stay updated on industry trends, embrace technology, develop communication and interpersonal skills, and pursue a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration.”
When she’s not working, Schelling serves as one of the newest members of the Kentucky Derby Festival Board.
“At this time of year, KDF keeps us very busy. I am on the committee for the fashion show at Caesars Southern Indiana, the Great BalloonFest, Marathon and Mini-Marathon, derby pins, and I also work the Hole-in-One Golf Contest,” she said. “Since this is my first year on the board, I am still learning as I go. Being involved with KDF, you meet so many wonderful people throughout the community. During the two weeks before Derby, I expect to meet people from all over the country, maybe all over the world.”
