Whether you go for the food, the livestock and agriculture, the concerts, or the rides, the Kentucky State Fair is a treasure trove. And beginning Thursday, August 20, it’s here for 10 days!
We decided to have a little fun and tap into some of the ways water is connected to some of your favorite fair traditions.
- Ever check out the gigantic pumpkins in the West Wing? Usually weighing in at 1400 pounds or more, pumpkins are made up of 80-90% water!

Who are we kidding – fair food is a MUST for just about everyone who goes! That buttery corn on the cob is delicious. Did you know it takes 15 gallons of water to grow just one ear of corn? Swing by the agricultural displays to see prize-winning corn, tomatoes, peppers, and more.- Don’t forget to grab those free cups of popcorn. You can hear the popping and smell it in the South Wing. Fun fact: popcorn pops when water inside the kernel turns to steam.
Pigs, sheep, cattle, and horses live at the fairgrounds during the event. While pigs can drink anywhere from one to three gallons of water per day, horses generally lap up five to 10 gallons daily.- For every bale of hay you see in the livestock area, it took 35 gallons of water to produce each one.
Come see Louisville Water and meet Tapper at the Kentucky State Fair! We’ll be there on Friday, August 21 and Monday, August 24 from 3-7 p.m. at the Louisville Tourism booth.
Pure Tap pro-tip: The fair almost always means hot days – remember to stay hydrated! Pack your reusable bottle to fill up at water fountains located throughout the Expo Center.
#PureTapProud Moments at the Fair

We’re Pure Tap Proud to see how inspiration from Louisville Water spilled over into creative forms in previous fairs. Check out how one baker imagined a cup of our water as a cake design! Two photographers took home ribbons for their amazing shots of the Louisville Water Tower.
