An interactive map that GIS Applications Developer Eric O’Neal created to show our company’s water main installations — since 1864! — won a top award from the Kentucky Association of Mapping Professionals (KAMP).
The association “has an annual conference with a gallery competition of maps submitted by attendees,” O’Neal explained. “The maps in each category are voted on during the conference, and the award was for Best Interactive Map for 2024.”
The map shows a timelapse of our water main installations based on company data. GIS Manager Dan Lambert pointed out one caveat: “The app only displays water mains that were depicted on the last version of the AutoCAD pipeline maps, which were used to convert to GIS in 2001, and those which have been added since the GIS Conversion. This means that there could have been pipes which were originally installed and later replaced prior to the GIS Conversion Project in 2001.”
Still, the map provides a fascinating simulation of the historical growth of Louisville Water’s mains. Click here to check it out.
