Just a few months ago, Cionna Wilson graduated from Ballard High School with a 3.7 GPA.
Now, she’s an incoming freshman at the University of Kentucky eager to earn a degree in Computer Science.
Wilson is Louisville Water’s 2024 Thomas Family Scholarship winner, a $10,000 academic award sponsored by the company through the YMCA Black Achievers Program.
“I’ve been involved with the program since my freshman year of high school and it’s been amazing,” Wilson said. “I was also in the Beta Club and the National Honor Society.”
The Thomas Family Scholarship honors the first Black family on Louisville Water’s payroll dating back to 1872. Wilson is the fourth student to receive the award through Black Achievers since 2021.
“I’m really thankful to Louisville Water for this opportunity,” Wilson said.
To earn the scholarship, Wilson had to submit letters of recommendation and community service hours. She also had to write several essays. Among them, an essay on the importance of water.
“Water is required to be purified before properly being able to drink, which is why the Louisville Water Company does a great job of providing quality drinking water,” Wilson wrote. “Safe water is an important aspect of life on earth.”
Wilson begins her first day of classes at UK on August 26. Congratulations and cheers to a successful school year!
