Tapper’s Naughty or Nice Holiday Tip-List

Santa holding a phone with TapperLouisville Water Company’s beloved mascot, Tapper, has had the big man in the red suit on speed dial this week. As Santa plans his route through the Greater Louisville area, he’s checking his list, and he’s checking it twice, for good stewards of our most valuable present: Louisville Pure Tap®.

Check out our list of tips to make sure you stay on the nice list and your holiday celebrations stay safe and merry this year!

Nice List

  • watering Christmas treeJust like we need water, your Christmas tree does too! Make sure to water your tree daily to keep it hydrated and reduce the risk of a fire.
  • Wrap exposed pipes with insulating material. You can buy these materials from a hardware store.
  • If your home has a crawl space, cover the outside vents to prevent winter winds from freezing the pipes.
  • If your house has a slab foundation, close the garage door. Some pipes are located under concrete floors in the garage.
  • In cases of extreme weather, run a small stream of water from your cold-water faucets where pipes are exposed or have frozen in the past.
  • Schedule a visit to Louisville Water Tower and discover the rich history of Louisville Water at our WaterWorks Museum. Pro tip: The Tower is open for public visits on the second Sunday of each month from 12- 5 p.m.
  • Practice proper handwashing techniques by following Louisville Water’s Clean Hands Up! Pro tip: You can request a lesson with a Louisville Water educator for your workplace, school, or community event.

Naughty List

  • Drinking bottled water instead of Louisville’s best-tasting tap water. Trade your store-bought bottle in for a reusable one! Bonus: It’s Pure Tap-branded and there’s dozens of bottle fill stations throughout Louisville.
  • Assuming your home doesn’t have a leak. About one in five homeowners contact Louisville Water each year with concerns about a leak.
  • Neglecting to check that toilet that’s been running for days. That leaky toilet can use 1,000 gallons of water every day. It’s one of the most common sources of a leak. You can do your own at-home test to find out!
  • water shutoff valveAssuming everyone in the house knows where the main water shutoff valve is located. Your water shutoff valve controls the water coming into your home, allowing you to turn it off in the event of a leak or water line break. We recommend tagging it with a waterproof hanger so others in the family know where to find it, too! Pro tip: Louisville Water provides free tags for customers. Just stop by the Third Street location and ask a customer service agent for one.
  • Not knowing your typical water usage. Track your usage in Pure Connect℠ and sign up for alerts which could help detect any problems and catch leaks early.
