It seems like students were just starting summer break and here we are ready to start another school year!
Louisville Water is in the flow of things helping send kids back to school with some tools for success.
Last month, about 400 people attended La Casita’s school sendoff. Children picked up backpacks with supplies, some received a fresh haircut and health screenings, and they even scored a new bike helmet. Louisville Water handed out pencils, bookmarks, and stickers to help fill their new backpacks along with handy soap sheets. Proper handwashing is a life lesson that Louisville Water shares with schools year-round.
“Many students in our service area kick off the new school year with visits from our Education and Outreach team,” said Community Relations Specialist Barbara Crow. “Back-to-school events give us an opportunity to introduce the fun, free, water-related programming we can bring to the classroom. Many of these events are outdoors or in crowded gyms, so it’s also always a great place to serve Louisville Pure Tap®.”
Over at Metro United Way, Louisville Water’s Service Board dove right in to help stuff 400 backpacks with notebooks, folders, pens, and other supplies. The backpacks went quickly at two different LMPD National Night Out events on August 6. A full-circle moment because it turned out that some of those same backpacks stuffed by Louisville Water employees were given away at the Kroger on West Broadway where we were also on hand to serve up ice cold Pure Tap® and give out more school swag.
“It certainly pulls on your heartstrings when you see a kiddo come through (the line) that’s excited about getting a backpack and some school supplies,” said Metro United Way President & CEO Adria Johnson.
As a single parent of two children years ago, Johnson said back-to-school shopping can be both exciting and stressful.
Hundreds of parents felt a little of the burden lifted at Foster Traditional Academy and Thomas Jefferson Middle School which each hosted backpack giveaways. Louisville Water helped quench their thirst as the children filled up their bags with a couple pencils, Tapper stickers, and bookmarks for all those books they’ll be reading this year.
Louisville Water is also heading back to the classrooms. The 2023-2024 school year was a busy one for our education and outreach team, cramming in nearly 800 lessons at 100 different locations! Do you have a topic in mind for your students? We look forward to connecting with you this year!
