Home / Service Line Inventory
Maintaining Quality & Trust
Louisville Water needs to identify the service line material for approximately 50,000 customers. The focus is on homes built before 1950. We need to know if the private water service line is lead or galvanized steel. If it is, we’ll replace it for free!
Louisville’s drinking water does not contain lead when it leaves our treatment plants. The risk for lead to enter drinking water comes from corrosion of plumbing materials made with lead. Louisville Water balances the water chemistry to minimize the risks, but the best way to protect your drinking water from lead is to remove lead and galvanized water lines that were installed years ago.
This page explains our effort to identify your private water service line.
Beginning in summer 2025, crews will visit neighborhoods in Louisville Water’s service area where there are addresses with “unknown” material for the private water service line. Crews will identify the pipe material with either a home inspection or a small hand dig near the water meter.
Remember, the focus is on structures built before 1950. Why 1950? Our research shows we’ve not found a private lead service line installed in structures built in 1950 or later.
If we identify a lead or galvanized steel line, Louisville Water will provide a new water service line for free.
Funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Kentucky Infrastructure Authority helps Louisville Water maintain infrastructure and improve public health.
Louisville Water’s work to identify the material of customer water service lines and replace lead and galvanized steel line is financed, in part, by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). This program benefits more than 47,000 customers in Jefferson County.
Federally Assisted Drinking Water Revolving Loan Fund programs operate around the country to provide states and communities the resources necessary to maintain and improve infrastructure that protects our valuable water resources nationwide.
Service Line Inventory
Louisville Water has compiled information on the water service lines we installed along with details for the lines located on customer properties. Our research included reviewing our records that date back to 1860, looking at publicly available information on construction for a customer’s property, and using a predictive modeling tool.
1950 is an important date.
In our research, we have not seen a lead or galvanized water line in a structure built in 1950 or later. That means the focus for the service line inventory are properties built before 1950.
Typical Water Service Line

The service line is the pipe that brings drinking water from the water main into your home. Louisville Water installs a service line from the water main and then the customer installs one on their property.

What to Expect When We Show Up
Louisville Water crews are visiting properties where our records show there’s an unknown material for the water service line. You’ll get a postcard a few days before we visit your home. When we arrive, we’ll ask to come inside to identify the water service line material. If you’re not home or if it’s not a good time to come inside, our crew will do a small hand dig near the water meter to identify the service line material. We’ll leave a flag in the lawn to show we were there and we’ll leave a note on the door explaining what we found. If we find your water service line is made of lead or galvanized steel, we’ll replace it for free!
It’s important to know that this is the only reason Louisville Water would ask to come inside your home. Watch the video to learn more about our visit.
Lead Service Line Replacement Program
If you have a private lead or galvanized steel water service line at your property, Louisville Water will replace it for free. After we’ve verified the pipe material, our crew will explain the process for a free water service line.
