Understanding Boil Water Advisories
At Louisville Water, your health and safety are our top priority. It doesn’t happen often, but occasionally, we need to issue a boil water advisory.
What does a boil water advisory mean?
A boil water advisory is a type of consumer advisory which results from circumstances where the water quality in the distribution system may have been compromised. As a precaution, we issue an advisory with information on the steps you should follow.
Why would an advisory be issued and what is the process?
A boil water advisory may be issued for various reasons, such as a water main break in your area or a drop in water pressure, or any other condition in the distribution system that may compromise the quality of the water.
Louisville Water wants to ensure you are receiving the highest-quality Louisville Pure Tap®. Our field crews and water quality team work together to restore normal water service in the affected area. We do that by making repairs, flushing pipes, collecting samples, and analyzing the water quality. We will lift the advisory once optimal water quality is verified.
What do I need to do if there is a boil water advisory in my area?
When an advisory is issued, water intended for drinking or cooking should be boiled at a rolling boil for at least three minutes before consumption.
What do I do when the advisory is lifted?
Once the boil water advisory is lifted, Louisville Water recommends following the steps listed below.
