It’s something we all learn at a young age, and it’s a message that’s very timely as thousands of cases of the flu prompted many schools to close their doors last week. We’re talking about proper handwashing. Louisville Water spreads the message to hundreds of children every year in hopes of helping them to not spread germs!
One of our educators visited a school last week to share the Clean Hands Up! lesson which teaches kids why it’s important to wash their hands. The fun happens with a hands-on activity where the children practice using glow-in-the-dark lotion to help point out those areas where germs can hide, like under the fingernails or in between the fingers.
More classroom visits are scheduled this week and the rest of the school year.
It’s an important lesson to reinforce, especially when you consider that on February 7, Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness reported the number of flu cases had jumped from more than 6,000 this season to nearly 9,000 in one week. That’s on top of the regular colds and other illnesses floating around. It’s hard to believe that it was nearly five years ago when we navigated through the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. You may remember the clever video from Tapper who spread the word about “handwashin’, germ stoppin’!”
Bottom line: there will always be germs out there. So, let’s do our part to try to stay healthy – lather that soap and water and wash your hands!
