All the fall feels were flowing at Crescent Hill Reservoir & Gatehouse for Louisville Water’s 2nd annual “fall open house.” Blue skies, sunshine, and a cool breeze made for a perfect setting at the historic landmark.
Guests strolled the reservoir with a history lesson about the property, wandered inside the gatehouse, savored “fall snacks” with refreshing Louisville Pure Tap® and apple cider, and children delighted in hopping in the driver’s seat of various trucks as well as trying their hand at being a scientist for a few minutes.
For some families, it was a step back in time. Rose Adye now lives in Shively but grew up around the reservoir.
“We would roll down this hill, rode our bikes down this hill, we would go to Crescent Hill.” Adye said, “We’d come up here and just walk around the water for fun. I brought my kids, if they were good, we’d come up here with bread and feed the ducks.”
It was actually Adye’s son who read about the open house in NewsSplash, Louisville Water’s customer newsletter.
Chris Cobb saw the event and said, “Oh, this looks like fun. I said, ‘mom, we want to do this? Sounds like we can go back down memory lane’.”
Indeed the memories came flooding back, and Adye made new memories with her son and grandson.
“I love how they had had the little booths set up to teach the children. It was really interesting, and all the children seemed to be interacting really well.”
Meeting Tapper in person was everything for three-year-old Callie, who couldn’t contain her sheer joy as she clung to her plushie of the beloved Louisville Water mascot. Tapper gave hugs, high-fives, and enjoyed storytime while Louisville Fire Captain Tamara Stewart read his favorite book- Tapper’s Big Adventure: Where’s the Water?.
Sharing part of Louisville Water’s story at the beautiful reservoir and gatehouse has been well-received.
“The response exceeded my expectations. Seeing all the smiles from happy children and adults alike makes all the work that goes on behind the scenes to host the open house well worth it,” said Community Relations Supervisor Kayla Hanak. “Louisville has some of the best drinking water in the country and people are amazed when they learn not only about the science of it but about all the people it takes to produce and deliver Pure Tap.”
Thank you to everyone who joined us at the fall open house. It was a picture-perfect day to wrap up Walking Wednesdays this season at the reservoir.
