It’s National Infrastructure Week

This week we are celebrating the 7th annual National Infrastructure Week, which brings together businesses, workers, elected leaders, and everyday citizens to spotlight America’s roads, bridges, rail, ports, airports, water and sewer systems, energy grid, and more. Infrastructure Week aims to educate the public on the critical issue of infrastructure that impacts all Americans. This year’s theme is Let’s Build for Tomorrow. Starting Now.

For Louisville Water and Louisville MSD, infrastructure includes our pipes that carry our high-quality drinking water to customers’ homes and the pipes that take our wastewater away to the treatment plants. Together, we have more than 7,000 miles of pipe to accomplish that. Louisville Water reaches nearly one million customers this way, and Louisville MSD serves nearly 700,000 people.

Both organizations use remote control technology to inspect these thousands of miles of pipes. MSD inspects all pipes on a 10-year basis, and in 2018, Louisville Water inspected 27.5 miles of water main.

Louisville Water has a daily delivery of 120 million gallons of safe, clean drinking water a day to our customers, while MSD treats about 153 million gallons of wastewater that is then released back into our local waterways every day.

Louisville MSD’s flood protection system protects more than 200,000 people, 87,000 homes and $24 billion in property throughout 110 square miles of Louisville Metro. It includes 29 miles of floodwall and earthen levee, 16 flood pumping stations, nearly 150 floodgates and 80 floodwall closures.

In addition to more than 4,200 miles of water mains, Louisville Water has more than 24,490 fire hydrants, 315,268 service connections, 54,307 valves and over 81.5 million gallons of water in reservoirs, elevated storage tanks and standpipes in the retail service area.
