Replacing Your Service Line
You’re getting a new water service line for free!
You have given Louisville Water permission to replace your lead or galvanized steel service line.
The good news… it won’t cost you a cent.
What is Being Replaced?
The service line is the pipe that brings drinking water from the water main into your home. Louisville Water installs a service line from the water main and then the customer installs one on their property. You own the portion of the service line that is on your property. That’s what we will replace.

What Happens Next?
A Louisville Water representative will contact you to get the work scheduled. You have two options:
- A Louisville Water contractor can replace the line.
- Or you can choose a certified plumber to do the work.
Both options are FREE!
If you choose a Louisville Water contractor, here’s what happens:
- You will be placed on a “wait list.”
- The current wait time for a replacement is approximately three months. We’ll coordinate the replacement with you because someone needs to be home during the work.
- The work includes free line replacement and yard restoration.
If you’d like a quicker option, you can choose a private plumber. It will be your responsibility to:
- Email Louisville Water as soon as possible to start this process: leadproject@LouisvilleWater.com. You can also give us a call (502) 569-0898.
- A Louisville Water representative will reach out to you to discuss:
- How to submit quotes (Licensed plumbers registered with Louisville Water will be paid directly.)
- Approval and scheduling
- Private plumber reimbursement
If you choose a private plumber, you are responsible for restoration work.
What to Expect During Your Service Line Replacement

- You must be home when your service line is replaced.
- Your water will be turned off for several hours.
- The work crew will dig a trench in your front yard to access and remove the old lead or galvanized steel service line. The new line will be installed, and the trench will be filled.
- After the replacement, we will flush the new water line for 60 minutes.
- You will receive a credit on your Louisville Water bill for the water used to flush.
What Happens After the Service Line Replacement
Louisville Water contractors will restore the site to its original condition. If you choose to use a private plumber, you are responsible for restoration. You will receive a water pitcher filter to use for six months.
Three months after the replacement, you’ll receive information about retesting your water.
