If you want good bourbon, you come to Kentucky. If you want high-quality, great-tasting drinking water, you get it fresh from the faucet in Louisville!
During National (and Kentucky) Bourbon Heritage Month, Angel’s Envy is blending the two in a ‘hyper local’ batch featuring local grains and local water. Two-Grain Bourbon Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey’s recipe calls for unfiltered Louisville Pure Tap®, corn sourced from Shelby County, Kentucky, and barrels from a local cooperage.
Master Distiller Owen Martin ranks Louisville Pure Tap® highly in terms of water quality. When he started brainstorming how to level up a batch that’s been aging for nearly six years, Martin took a closer look at water’s effect on the flavor profile.
“I thought this was an opportunity to, in my mind, partner with the water company and do that in an authentic way and a way that I thought the water would impact the whiskey as well,” Martin shared.
So, he went straight to the source.
“It was such a cool request to have a master distiller reach out and say, ‘Hey, can I hang out at the lab with all your science geeks?’ But then to say, ‘Can I take the water and see what I can do with it?’, that was pretty special,” said Kelley Dearing Smith, Louisville Water’s vice president of communications and marketing.
Louisville Water provided Angel’s Envy with a top-shelf supply of Pure Tap, directly from the Crescent Hill Water Treatment Plant.
“We wanted to hit the trifecta. So, the last cut that we did was with Louisville Pure Tap®. Our (the distillery) faucet would’ve run it through a filter which would’ve stripped all the uniqueness out of that,” Martin explained. “It was the final finishing touch, the last final kiss on the whiskey to make it what we wanted it to be.”
On Thursday, Louisville Water Tower served as the backdrop to showcase the limited- edition release. Guests enjoyed a short tour of the Tower and pumping station followed by a bourbon and water tasting. For these bourbon connoisseurs, the shot of Pure Tap delighted their palates.
“It’s awesome to see water finally getting its props in the bourbon world,” one guest from Lexington commented.
Beginning today, you can find the Two-Grain Bourbon exclusively at Angel’s Envy Distillery in downtown Louisville. And you can always find Louisville Pure Tap at a faucet near you.
