“Although there have been ups and downs over the years, it has been overall, a really great place to work.”

Local 1683 Vice President Bart Matherly is reflecting on his long career with Louisville Water before he retires at the end of the month.

Matherly is grateful that Inspection Supervisor Wayne Whitehouse encouraged him to apply back in 2001. That’s not the only reason he can thank Whitehouse.

“Fun fact, Wayne also introduced me to my wife 11 years before. I have been married 31 years on the 18th of this month,” Matherly said.

In 2016, Matherly decided he wanted to have a bigger voice with Local 1683. He has served as the union VP for more than four years.

“I got involved in the union leadership to be part of the solution. It is super easy to fall into the attitude of complaining. I would rather jump in and help fix the problem than feel the frustration that comes from complaining.”

While it’s had its fill of challenges, Matherly said serving Local 1683 is hands down his greatest achievement during his time at Louisville Water.

“Sometimes you are put in no-win situations. However, I have tried my hardest to be honest and have integrity as I have filled my role. I really appreciate the opportunity the body has given me by putting me in office.”

Outside of work, Matherly enjoys being a husband, father, grandfather, and an elder at his church. In fact, he’s served as a student pastor for almost 10 years.

“I lead a student Bible study every Wednesday night, where I am super proud to be part of arguably the most diverse youth group in Louisville. We have students from the United States, Cuba, Nepal, and Liberia.”

While he’ll have more time to devote to those classes after retiring, he also plans to spend more time with his family.

“We love to go to the lake on the boat, fish, and anything outdoor-related. I plan on fishing a little more upon retirement when I can sneak away from the extensive “honey do list” my wife has put together for me, but other than that I am really just being open to what God has planned,” Matherly said.
