Being a Good Neighbor: Cleaning up after Main Breaks

Spring is just around the corner and for most of us, it can’t come soon enough. January and February left us buried in snow with bitter cold temperatures. Those harsh conditions left Louisville Water buried in a mound of water main breaks, mostly in neighborhoods. The steady flow of repair tickets meant restoration work often took a back seat.

“Immediately after fixing or replacing a service, we try and do our best to make the yard look as good or better than what it was before we were there. That’s not always possible with the weather, so we make a ticket for the address to come back to it at a better time to clean it up and fix it the right way,” said Plumber Leader’s Assistant Allen Banet.

Banet and Plumber Leader David Jared recently took advantage of warmer and drier weather to return to some of those neighborhoods where we repaired pipes.

“Putting down dirt, straw, seed, and cleaning up the street from any mud left behind,” Jared explained. “This one was dirt next to the curb where they poured a new curb. They put asphalt down and we just had to put dirt next to it where they put the curb in.”

Across town next to Algonquin Park, Plumber Leader Mon’Shea Harris and his crew faced the opposite problem on Cypress Street.

“The main break was pretty big, so it put dirt all on the sidewalk and against the side of the road,” Harris said.

Using shovels, electric brooms, and a backhoe, they removed the piles of dirt.

“We came out to clean it up and get all the dirt off the sidewalk. I wouldn’t want it in front of my house, so I would like to make it look as best as I possibly can,” Harris shared.

Restoration work varies depending on the size of the main break, the location, and the level of difficulty repairing it. On Thornberry Avenue, Banet and the rest of the crew replaced rocks with dirt in the hole, raked it out, then added straw and grass seed.

“We want the customers to know that when we show up, that they’re not going to be left with the stress of having to repair or clean up their yard. We take pride in what we do and how we leave it looking afterwards,” said Banet.

If you live on a street where a water main broke during the winter but haven’t seen us back in the neighborhood yet, Jared says not to worry.

“Bear with us. It’s gonna take some time because we’ve had a lot of main breaks. There’s a lot of cleanup to do.”
