The Louisville Water Foundation is participating in Give For Good Louisville on Fri., Sept. 17 to raise funding and awareness for Drops of Kindness℠.
For many in the Louisville region, the past 18 months have come with unparalleled hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Households already living paycheck to paycheck didn’t have the margins or savings to sustain the chaos that have come with the pandemic.
Families that were getting by in normal times suddenly have found themselves struggling to make ends meet and cover basic necessities.
In non-pandemic times, Drops of Kindness℠ typically assists around 2,000 households in the Louisville region with their utility bills. In the midst of 2020 and 2021, that need has skyrocketed to as many as 18,000 households a month receiving assistance from Drops of Kindness℠.
For most of these households, this is a new, gut-wrenching situation. One Drops of Kindness℠ recipient works at a local preschool. While she is actively employed, the cycle of shutdowns at her workplace whenever there is a potential COVID-19 exposure among the children has created gaps in her usual income and wreaked havoc on her finances. Having access to Drops of Kindness℠ has helped her through this challenging time.
Another Drops of Kindness℠ recipient was laid off due to supply chain backups because of the pandemic. He didn’t have the financial cushion to bridge the unpredictable timing of unemployment assistance and his regular bills. Drops of Kindness℠ has helped him with his utility bills during his gap in income.
Drops of Kindness℠ is assisting seniors and others on fixed income during this time as well. Retirees who find themselves needing to avoid exposure to COVID-19 face increasing costs for services and goods, while their income remains static. Drops of Kindness℠ has been able to offer relief in the face of mounting expenses and inflated prices.
For agencies like the Association of Community Ministries, Drops of Kindness℠ is a critical tool in their toolbox for assisting folks in need. The Louisville Water Foundation partners with the Association of Community Ministries, as well as the Tri-County Community Action Partnership, the Multi-Purpose Community Action Agency, the Red Cross, and the Salvation Army’s Water Bill Payment Assistance Program to bring relief and hope to those in need. That assistance can provide a Band-Aid and a bridge to a better situation.
“Assistance from the Louisville Water Foundation allows agencies like ours to provide a ray of hope in dark times,” said Marlon Cummings with Jeffersontown Area Ministries.
