Falling leaves remind homeowners to keep meter lids clear

meter lidAutumn leaves changing colors may be beautiful to see, but the falling leaves mean work for most homeowners. While you rake the leaves from your yard, Louisville Water meter readers ask that you remove leaves and debris from your meter lids too, especially before the snow falls.

Typically, your residential water meter is in your yard, housed in a meter vault with a lid. Snow on meter lids will melt faster without leaves insulating them.

Clear meter lids help ensure that nothing freezes to your meter lid, your meter reader finds your meter quickly, and your water bill will be actual, not estimated.

Also while clearing your meter lid, take a close look at it, too. Louisville Water has more than 400,000 meter vaults in our service area. Meter readers have a vault key that safely opens the lid, and they use the key to safely close the lid after each reading.

The meter vault that houses your water meter is Louisville Water property and we ask that you do not open the meter vault for your safety. However, plumbers and other outside agencies may access the vault and not secure the lid properly, causing a safety issue for anyone who could encounter it.

If you see an unsecure meter lid in your yard or anywhere else, call the Radio Room at 502.368.0127 or 502.569.3664 anytime to report it so we can respond as soon as possible.
This is also a good time to check that your storm drains are clear of debris so that rain and melted snow can drain properly as well.
