It’s Imagine a Day Without Water

No morning shower, no clean clothes, no coffee — today is Imagine a Day Without Water, which “brings together diverse participants to highlight how water is essential, invaluable, and in need of continuous investment,” according to imagineadaywithoutwater.org.

The website also points out that “when a person doesn’t have water, they cannot stay hydrated, prepare meals, bathe their children, wash their hands, flush the toilet, or do laundry … and our nation’s public health and safety are compromised.”

The Louisville Water Foundation supports the message behind Imagine a Day Without Water and works to make sure everyone has access to clean, safe water by funding customer assistance programs and emergency services as well as educational efforts and clean water projects throughout the country and around the world.

For instance, the Foundation provided emergency funding for recovery efforts after historic flooding in eastern Kentucky last year. A grant to WaterStep supported the deployment of Water on Wheels (WOW) mobile units — mini-water treatment plants with microfiltration, carbon absorption, UV, and chlorination. A single WOW Cart can treat up to 15,000 gallons of water a day, providing safe water for mobile showers, laundry, food preparation, handwashing, and community distribution.

An example of the Foundation’s overseas work is a grant to Water Is Basic for their efforts in South Sudan. According to Water Is Basic Executive Director Carrie Ward, the grant “will enable local well repair teams … to quickly and efficiently repair wells to ensure that communities have access to safe drinking water.”
