Thousands of runners are lacing up their shoes to gear up for the Kentucky Derby Festival (KDF) race series. While the 5K, mini, and MARATHON aren’t on tap until late April, many people start training months ahead of time. Louisville Water helped welcome runners last week at the Kentucky Derby Museum for the Norton Sports Health Training Program.
“The Norton Training Program Kickoff is really the unofficial start of Derby season for us. The KDF mini/MARATHON is such a huge event for our city, and it’s exciting to see so many runners starting the year off strong. I was especially proud to see several Louisville Water employees come through the door!”, shared Kayla Hanak, Louisville Water’s community relations supervisor.
Whether it’s their first race or their 12th, the free 15-week program aims to prepare runners and walkers for the main event. It includes weekly group runs, cross-training, and tips to stay healthy. Our pro-tip is to include Louisville Pure Tap® in your routine.
“Hydration is such a crucial component of any athletic pursuit, but people don’t think about it as much in the winter.” Hanak said, “We’re here to remind runners that even if you aren’t dripping sweat after a run, you still need to replenish those fluids. With the dry winter air, it’s important to drink plenty of Pure Tap throughout the day so that your body is ready for the challenge!”
Runners enjoyed cups of Pure Tap and picked up cool stickers to remind them to hydrate.
If you missed the kickoff, there’s still time to snag a spot in the training program or sign up to race. Louisville Water will help fuel you to the finish line with several water stops along the course. You’ll also find some of our employees personally cheering you on at the water stop outside our corporate office on Third Street and after you cross the finish line.
Pure Tap pro-tip: Drink before you’re thirsty. By the time you feel thirsty, your body has lost up to five cups of water.
