Labor-Management Conference Offers Learning and Teambuilding

Tucked away in a peaceful part of western Kentucky, Kentucky Dam Village State Park provided a perfect spot for learning and relaxing at the Kentucky Labor-Management Conference.

Managers and union members from across the Commonwealth gathered last week for the annual event. While it’s a great opportunity to meet people with similar careers and interests, the conference includes a variety of educational sessions.

This year’s program highlighted apprenticeship resources, strategies on building a stronger workforce for the future, investing for retirement, and union contract negotiations.

Kendall-Boyd-presents-at-KLMLouisville Water Manager of Employee and Labor Relations Kendall Boyd talked about navigating Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) practices in the current national climate.

“This was my second time being a presenter at the conference on such an important topic,” Boyd shared. “Companies and labor unions need to have strong, non-discriminatory business practices when it comes to inclusion models, and my presentation highlighted best practices for organizations to adopt, in order to successfully navigate DEIB challenges that may arise in the implementation of their strategy.”

The agenda always builds in ample time for teambuilding, live music, good food, and of course, fishing on the lake.

Both Company and Local 1683 (Louisville Water’s union) members left the resort feeling it was time well spent.

Local 1683 Vice President Adam Purvis said, “The general consensus was that it was a beneficial conference for both management and union.”

Director of Distribution Operations Joe Schmitt echoed that sentiment.

“It was a very successful conference with an atmosphere that was perfect for camaraderie and teambuilding.”

Governor Andy Beshear and Lieutenant Governor Jacqueline Coleman also stopped by the conference to show their support.
