Louisville Water Educator Susan Sampson aims to make learning fun

Louisville Water educator Susan Sampson has been teaching kids about water and healthy hydration for the past six years.

A Jefferson County Public Schools retiree, Sampson has worked in a variety of roles including teacher, counselor, school liaison and assistant principal.

When she enters a classroom on behalf of Louisville Water she aims to make water education fun and engaging for the students.

“I have a variety of hands-on activities that I use in elementary and high schools so every student gets the opportunity to participate and learn by doing,” Sampson said.

For younger students, Sampson uses river samples, rocks, sand and dirt to demonstrate how water is filtered from the Ohio River. With the older students, she focuses on health and the environment.

“I use vials of sugar to show exactly how much sugar is in some of their favorite drinks,” she said. “I’ll also tell them how much water it takes to make one cheeseburger, an order of fries and a soda—1,500 gallons of water. This is the ‘a-ha’ moment for students.”

Sampson said working as a Louisville Water educator is every teacher’s dream because she gets the materials and resources she needs to be successful in the classroom, leaving a lasting impact on the students.

“I want students to know how fortunate they are to live in Louisville and have access to the best tasting water in the United States.”
