“I thought it was like a fancy mansion or hotel!” Asa exclaimed.
The first grader finally got a chance to see the Louisville Water Tower up close when his class from Lowe Elementary visited on a field trip last week. Not only did he learn the Tower had a very important job during the 1800s and early 1900s, he got to explore the WaterWorks Museum. The museum is housed in what was the Original Pumping Station No. 1.
“It’s always exciting to bring field trips to the Louisville Water Tower,” said Education & Outreach Specialist Heather Hill.

“Showing them where their drinking water starts really gets them thinking about bigger picture questions, like ‘where does my water come from? Or how does it become safe to drink? Things we typically don’t ask ourselves when we turn on our faucets.”
The children learned about how their drinking water is cleaned, went on a scavenger hunt in the museum, saw the Tower, and stepped inside a working pumping station. It was a big day!
Brendan’s favorite part?
“Seeing all the stuff. I didn’t know they used a little robot to check in the water,” Brendan shared, talking about PipeDiver which is sometimes used to inspect large water mains in Louisville Water’s distribution system.
As the kids moved from one spot to the next on their tour, it was pretty clear they enjoyed their field trip.
“Of course we did!” Asa said enthusiastically.
“Louisville Water Tower and WaterWorks Museum have something for learners of all ages, whether it’s our history, current treatment process, or gorgeous views of the Ohio River,” Hill said.
