Recovering Stronger

Addressing a national audience, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer talked about the pandemic’s impact on Louisville Water and Louisville MSD as well as the future of both utilities.

Fischer was a guest speaker during a US Water Alliance event that focused on the organization’s Recovering Stronger initiative, which is fostering federal, state and local partnerships that will help the water sector — and the nation — recover stronger from the pandemic and related economic crisis.

According to the alliance, “We can take this moment of deep disruption and turn it into a source of lasting transformation in how we view, value, and manage our nation’s water systems.”

The virtual event — “Recovering Stronger: A Federal Policy Blueprint” — showcased the water sector’s legislative, regulatory, and administrative policy ideas. Mayor Fischer talked about a range of topics, including water and wastewater infrastructure, supporting diverse local contractors, the need for federal investments, and careers at Louisville Water and MSD.

“These are great jobs,” Fischer said. “We see people stay [in them] a long time.”

He also noted that Louisville “has some of the best water in the country.”

Fischer fielded questions along with Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot. Senators Tom Carper and Shelley Moore Capito also spoke during the online event.
